Meridian Professional Systems · Cybersecurity
Be taught it. Practise it. Then have something to show for it.
A year of structured cybersecurity education — 31 chapters, 31 guided labs on one supplied dataset, and 31 portfolio artefacts you can put in front of a hiring manager. Aligned to CompTIA Security+ SY0-701 without being only an exam crammer.
The problem
Most security material leaves you unable to do the work.
It fails in one of four predictable ways, and every one of them is survivable only if you already know the thing being explained.
Vocabulary without application
Concepts explained cleanly, so you finish able to define a term and unable to perform the task it names.
A new scenario every chapter
Each topic gets its own fictional company, so you never see how a finding in one area constrains a decision in another.
Labs that need a lab you do not have
Exercises that assume infrastructure, licences or a live network before the first instruction.
An exam pass and an empty portfolio
A certificate proves you sat a test. It does not show a hiring manager a single piece of work.
Operations
One organisation, thirty-one chapters, one continuous case.
Every worked example and every lab uses NovaTrust Health — one fictional regional healthcare provider — so an asset inventory you build in one chapter is the inventory a later chapter's risk assessment depends on.
The lab data ships with the system: 44 files of CSV, XML, text and Markdown, readable in Excel or a text editor. Nothing to install, nothing to license.
Job economics
The order the chapters are worked is not the order they are numbered.
Module numbers record the order they were written. The taught path follows prerequisites and milestone bands instead, and the build checks every module's prerequisites against that path — identity before compromise, asset inventory before the four modules that assume one exists.
The full path is roughly 300 hours. Two shorter routes are set out in the START HERE document, including an 18-piece, ~190-hour route to a SOC-analyst portfolio.
Miles' Reality Check
Things to consider before you start.
Know before you start
This is about 300 hours of work for the full path. It is a year of structured study, not a weekend course, and the labs expect you to actually do them.
The part that expires
The Practice Bank is written to SY0-701, which has a published retirement date of 11 June 2027. The teaching and the labs outlast it; the 280 exam-mapped questions are the part with a shelf life.
Good fit / bad fit
A good fit if you want to be taught and to finish with evidence. A poor fit if what you actually want is a curated list of the best free resources — that is the Cybersecurity Mastery System, and it costs $39.
What's inside
Eight documents. 353 pages. 52 files.
- Stage 0 — FoundationsFive chapters that assume nothing, build the isolated lab every later chapter uses, and set the vocabulary.
- Days 0–30 — Governance and identityIdentity comes early because every later module assumes an account exists to be compromised.
- Days 31–60 — Asset contextThe keystone band: four later modules all assume an inventory exists, so it precedes them.
- Days 61–90 — Risk, architecture and complianceThe largest band. Risk first, because architecture and control testing both express themselves in its language.
- Days 91–180 — Resilience and the extended estateWhat you design once you know what you have and what it is worth.
- Days 181–365 — Making it durableAutomation stops controls drifting; workforce and culture stops the team leaving.

Questions
Before you buy.
Is this a certification?
No. It is a taught curriculum with labs and a practice bank. CompTIA issues Security+; this prepares you for it and gives you a portfolio, which the certificate does not.
Do I need experience to start?
No. Stage 0 assumes nothing and builds both the vocabulary and the isolated lab environment that every later chapter uses.
What do the labs need?
The supplied data — 44 files of CSV, XML, text and Markdown — plus an isolated lab you build yourself in Chapter F2. Nothing here asks you to touch a system you do not own.
Is the data real?
No. NovaTrust Health is fictional and the dataset was generated from a single source model, which is why figures agree across files. Every IP address is synthetic or from a documentation-reserved range.
How long does it take?
Roughly 300 hours for the full path. START HERE sets out two shorter legitimate routes, including a ~190-hour route to a SOC-analyst portfolio.
How is it different from the $39 Cybersecurity Mastery System?
The Mastery System is a map: 497 curated external resources and nine career pathways, with a workbook to track your progress through them. This is the teaching itself, written out, with labs and practice questions. They work together and neither replaces the other.
What happens when SY0-701 retires?
It retires on 11 June 2027. The teaching, labs and portfolio work are not exam-bound and stay valid; the 280 questions are mapped to that revision's objectives.
